Press ReleaseMayor endorses joint approach on University expansionWednesday, 27 January 2010The Mayor Cllr Paul Fleming has welcomed the partnership approach by the University of Ulster and the University for Derry (U4D) pressure group in working collectively towards the development and expansion of the Magee campus. “I think that a collective approach is the best way forward to successfully deliver on the proposed development and expansion plans for the Magee campus. The Council is supportive of ongoing efforts to create a University City that has 10,000 students and that focuses on courses for the 21st century. We believe it will not only benefit the local economy but will expand the skills and employment opportunities available. The attractiveness of the city as a location for education, business growth and investment are closely linked and progress on increasing the graduate resources will improve the city's regeneration opportunities,” he commented. The Mayor also added that partnership efforts among the public agencies to address challenges of economic inactivity and skills attainment are essential for the city to compete for business, investment and education resources. “I am confident that with this partnership approach we can successfully build on the University of Ulster’s strong attributes to seek further expansion and development opportunities for the Magee campus that ill benefit the entire city and region,” he concluded.
